Alexithymia
Impaired capacity to describe emotions or bodily states. (sign of Affect Dysregulation)
Complex Trauma
Condition in which children and adolescents are repeatedly exposed to adverse experiences, and maltreatment by caregivers resulting in dysregulation in the areas of psychological, behavioral, interpersonal, emotional and cognitive functioning.
Developmental Trauma Disorder DTD
Term established by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network to reflect the true reality of outcomes in children exposed to chronic interpersonal trauma experiences.
Dissociation
A loss in the ability to process and integrate information and experiences resulting in a disconnection between thought and emotion.
Parentification
When one child, usually the oldest, takes on the role of parent.
Polyvictimization
having experienced multiple counts and types of victimizations such as sexual abuse, physical abuse, bullying, and exposure to family violence.
Resiliency
The ability of an individual to recover from adverse or traumatic events in a manner that is adaptive and nonpathologic.
Transgenerational
When a caregiver’s actions are based on their own parenting experiences.
