What is a robot?
A computerized machine capable of performing one or more tasks with great speed and accuracy. A robot is autonomous. A robot senses and responds to its environment.
What does autonomous mean?
This means it can work independently without without constant human intervention
What are the advantages of robots?
-Robots carry out repetitive work reliably.
-Robots work quickly
-Robots can work in dangerous environments.
-Robots can work in restricted places, where humans cannot reach
-Robots work with hazardous materials
Describe robots in manufacturing?
-Robots can construct cars from scratch.
-Robots work in industries (canned food) by doing all the required repetitive tasks.
-Robots work on the production of microprocessors ,which requires great accuracy. They work quickly and do not make mistakes
Describe robots sin agriculture:
-Drones spray crops
-Robots use automation, measure volume of water, measure time to harvest crops.
-Autonomous robots remove weed
-Farmers use tractors and satellite guidance to plough fields.
Describe Robots in medicine:
-Robots can be used to scan patients
-Robots can be used to assist in surgical operations
-Robots help patients recover and saves nurses from injury
Describe Robots in distribution:
-Robots can be used to organize deliveries.
-Robots such as drones can deliver packages quickly
What is a sensor?
a device that detects and responds to some type of input from the physical environment
What are the 3 different types of sensors?
-Proximity sensors: Use infrared light beams to detect the position of nearby objects
-Bumper switches: tell a robot that it has hit something
-Pressure Pads: are used to control robot hands as they pick objects up. They stop the robot from hand crushing the object.
List 2 important developments of robots through the years?
-Vision Guided Robotics (VGR): use of 2D and 3D cameras to give robots ‘vision’ to recognize and navigate objects and environments.
-Voice Recognition / Natural Language Processing (NLP):A method sued to allow robots to recognize human language , such as spoken commands.
What are embedded processors?
As small processor embedded inside any device. It allows robots to carry the processing power they need with them while moving autonomously ,and to control electrical and mechanical functions.
What is parallel processing?
It uses two or more processors at the same time to increase the power of a computer processor. Complex robots use parallel processors to complete complex tasks
What is AI?
Artificial intelligence is the use of computers to simulate intelligent behavior and to solve problems using human-like judgement.
Eg: Google maps
What is RTOS
Real Time Operating Systems are designed to work in real time applications where input data must be processed immediately. If a job starts it’s given all the processing power it needs. Safety processors have a high importance rating, if they see danger in the safety ,they give safety procedures all the processing it needs. Other jobs stop until the important job has finished.
Describe robots in disaster recovery?
- they have sensors to detect people that need to be rescued
-They have sensors to assess dangers
-Robots have mechanical tools to solve problems or take samples from a distaste site.
