Why did the Czechoslovakian crises come about and what were the demands of the people?
There was an economic downturn which showed failings of a planned economy
They wanted individual enterprise, consumer rights, power for the workforce, a responsive Communist party
Describe the Prague Spring
- Dubcek becomes Czech leader
- Turned out to want political reform
- Announces the Action Program (free speech, free press, free movement, freer market not planned)
- Assure the USSR they will be loyal to Warsaw Pact
- Warsaw Pact forces invade after meetings
- Dubcek remains as leader until 1969
- Hard line Soviet takes over
What was set out in the Brezhnev Doctrine?
Enforced responsibility of Communist states to intervene if Communism is threatened
Why did Khrushchev/Brezhnev dislike China?
They had criticised Khrushchev after Cuba and continued to do so
Why did China dislike the USSR?
USSR had withdrawn technological aid (nuclear weapons development)
Khrushchev didn’t notify them of his intent to place nukes on Cuba
The USSR had suggested getting rid of Mao as they did with Khrushchev
Why was Vietnam important to Sino-Soviet relationship?
Could have been a uniting factor
China didn’t want the USSR to increase their influence in Vietnam as they wanted to preserve theirs
