Steps before writing a prescription

A

make a diagnosis
-from symptoms and history

Make a therapeutic decision
-treatment goals

Choose a medication

  • efficacy (many factors involved - age, sex, pregnancy, genetics ect)
  • safety (allergy, adverse effects, other drug interactions)
  • appropriateness (cost, compliance)

Choose dosing regimen

  • route -IV, oral, skin patches ect.
  • dose - population, group, individual

A

Doctors name, signature, address, MCNZ registration number, phone number

Patients name, address, age if under 13

After prescription

A
  • Counsel patient (name, dose, how it works, reason, adverse effects, food and drink, follow up, give addition info)
  • Monitor response (what parameters can be measured, how often) - clinical response, biomarkers, drug conc
  • Review the medication - (efficacy and safety- desired effects, adverse effects, appropriateness (clinical changes, changes in medication), patient view (knowledge, understanding, adherence)
