• Empires were expensive to maintain-> shown in American Wars of Independence (war cost £80M) and Falkland War (cost £2.7B)
  -Post war trade led to neglect of colonies. New markets with USA and mainland Europe more profitable than imperialist methods. Post war reconstruction was also v expensive (Welfare State etc- Britain focussed on itself)
