Troubleshooting
To analyse and solve a pattern with the computer
Hardware troubleshooting
Refers to fixing an issue with the physical parts of a computer or any connected devices.
Steps to take
1) Try to identify the problem and ask user questions about the issue
2) Create a theory and prepare to test the it.
3) Create a troubleshooting plan, recording steps taken after each test
4) Create a findings document that explains how the issue was fixed for future reference.
Documentation process
1) The fault itself
2) The system in question
3) User logged in at time
4) Exact data and time
5) Symptoms of issue
6) Problem history
7) Back up documentation
Troubleshooting tools
Event viewer, Power on self test (POST), Ping test
Event viewer
Lists detailed information about an error when one occurs. Used to fix major and minor faults.
Power on self test (POST)
On start up, a POST checks memory, power, hardware and cooling system are all working properly
One beep signals no problem
Multiple beeps signal an error
Ping test
Connectivity test between two computers. A message is sent to the destination computer and waits for a return message.
No error = signal will return
Problem = Signal won’t return
