1.6 - Evaporation and condensation Flashcards
What process is evaporation?
A liquid turning into a gas
Describe the process of evaporation (2)
- The most energetic liquid molecules escape from the liquid’s surface
- They enter the air, thus taking on the properties of a gas
Why does evaporation cause cooling?
After the most energetic molecules leave, the average kinetic energy of the remaining molecules is less, so the temperature decreases
What are three ways you can increase the rate of evaporation?
1) Increasing the surface area of the liquid
2) Increasing the temperature of the liquid
3) Creating a draught of air across the liquid’s surface
What is the process of condensation?
A gas turning into a liquid
Where does condensation usually take place?
On cold surfaces, like windows and mirrors
What are two ways you can increase the rate of condensation?
- increasing the surface area
- reducing the surface temperature
