1.4 - Conduction Flashcards
1
Q
Which state of matter does conduction mainly occur in? Why?
A
Solids, because liquids and gases are poor conductors
2
Q
Describe the process of conduction (4)
A
- One end of a solid is heated
- Particles at that end gain kinetic energy and vibrate more
- This energy is passed to neighbouring particles
- In this way, the energy is transferred through the solid
3
Q
Why are all metals such good conductors?
A
When metals are heated, their free electrons gain kinetic energy and move through the metal, transferring energy by colliding with other particles
4
Q
What are poor conductors called?
A
Insulators
5
Q
Why are materials such as wood and fibreglass such good insulators?
A
They contain trapped air, which is a poor conductor
