16 Flashcards
What is die casting?
When a liquified metal is put in a fixed die and a moving die until it is solidified.
Then ejected using ejector pins.
What is sand casting?
tightly packing sand around a mould cavity and pouring liquified metal into it.
Then letting it cool into a solid
What is forging?
Two rams compressing a metal in a upper and lower die.
The work piece is hot and more ductile so it moulds easier.
What is the difference between open die and closed die?
Open die compressive an object only vertically.
What is extrusion?
A ram forces a billet into a die so that you can make a tube of sorts
Advantages and disadvantages of die casting?
High accuracy and stability
High melting point metals and alloys, high cost, long time and gas can get trapped
Advantages and disadvantages of sand casting?
Inexpensive and fabricate large components.
Low strength, low dimensional accuracy and poor surface finish.
Advantages and disadvantages of forging?
greater strength, finer grain structure, quick and fatigue resistance.
High cost, some cannot be forged and size limited.
What is wire/tube drawing?
putting a larger tube through a die with a low gradient so you get a smaller tube.
What is the rolling process?
A metal is drawn through two disks to create a hot-rolled steel.
What is tube/sheet hydroforming?
When a tube is expanded into a die by increasing the liquid pressure in the tube.
Same but with a sheet.
Advantages and disadvantages of wire/tube drawing?
Can make extremely long lengths.
Expensive and only really makes wires
