15.2 Flashcards
Porto-oncogene
Normal gene that promotes growth and mitosis of the cell. It doesn’t become an oncogene until it becomes mutated
Oncogene
A Proto-oncogene that has been mutated to increase the activity of its product.
Tumor suppressor genes
Genes that prevent uncontrolled growth or divisions. Example: Rb protein
What genes involved in cancer formation are dominant? And recessive?
Ras oncogene is dominant - only 1 mutation causes cancer. P53 is recessive due to both copies of the gene needing to be mutated to cause cancer
PTEN
Phosphatase and tensin homology deleted on the chromosome Ten.
Why is p53 mutated in most cancer cells?
Normally it suppresses cell growth, without it the cell divides non-stop
