Q

What are the two main lifting points for a Turbofan engine?

A

Both lifting points are on top of the engine, one attached to the fan case/frame and the other attached to the turbine frame.

Q

Where and why are Flexible fluid lines used on engines?

A

Flexible fluid lines are used in areas of high vibration and where a stationary component needs to be connected to a moving or vibrating component.

Flexible fluid lines are used on engines because engines along with their pylons are considered high vibration areas and rigid fluid lines may fail to fatigue failure.

Q

How do you get rid of fuel after a wet start?

A

After a wet start, any excess fuel in the combustor will collect at the bottom where a drain valve is lightly spring-loaded open and the fuel drains away safely. Combustor pressure upon a successful start up will close the drain valve against the light spring.

(wet start is when an attempted start-up fails to achieve self sustaining acceleration of the engine because ignition and light-up is unsuccessful: the start is aborted and the combustor section alllowed to drain before another start is attempted)

Q

What is a “Bootstrap” system?

A

The Bootstrap system is a type of self contained lifting change kit used to handle the lowering and raising of the engine from and up to the pylon.

Q

How are the structure of an aircraft and the potentially flammable contents of its systems protected from the heat produced by the engine?

A

Powerplants are often divided into zones by fireproof bulkheads, usually made of stainless steel, titanium or thermoplastic material

Q

What is the purpose of an engine cowling?

A

To give a powerplant a good aerodynamic profile which blends smoothly into that of the aircraft t must be enclosed with a ‘‘cowling’’

Q

How is the diameter of rigid and flexible pipelines measured?

A

The size of rigid tubing is determined by its outside diameter

The size of a flexible hose is determined by its inside diameter

Q

What is the purpose of an engine bootstrap handling system?

A

There is no need for an independent external crane or hoist

The engine sits on a cradle and everything needed to lower and extend the engine is contained within the bootstrap system.
