What is a Graphical User Interface (GUI)?
Allows the ease of use without having to enter commands into a command line prompt
What does GUI stand for?

What is multitasking?
Process of carrying out multiple tasks simultaneously
What will the OS take advantage of?
Multicore CPUs
Memory management
Why does memory management take place?
None-essential processes can be slowed down and priority applications run simultaneously
What do buffers do?
Allocate free memory to tasks that only require temporary storage of data
Why does the OS manage peripheral devices?
Require specific software or drivers to communicate with the main system and the OS will automatically install and update these drivers as required
What are peripheral devices?
Printers
Scanners
Webcams
What does user management allow?
The creation and management of multiple user accounts to a system
What can each user be assigned?
Access rights for both applications and files
Security privileges in respect to what they can read, edit and delete
What does file management allow?
Users to organise their own work into folders and subfolders with appropriate file names.
Once organised info can then be sorted and searched as required
What is a key element of all OS?
Threat prevention, Regular security updates help prevent potential attacks
What is a operating system?
Collection of programs that manages and controls the computer.
