During this period, law enforcement changed remarkably little. Many features from the medieval period remained, such as the hue and cry.

JPs were given more power in the mid 17th century by Queen Elizabeth I.

After 1650, JPs were given the power to fix wages, organise road mending, license alehouses and regulate local games.
Who was William Lambard?
William Lambard was a JP who wrote a book about how to be a JP. The book was very successful, and encouraged others to hold high morals.
What changed about the amount of watchmen being employed in the early modern period?
Within this period, more and more watchmen were employed for a variety of tasks, such as patrolling streets and arresting drunks.
Which two courts saw a decrease in usage after the mid 17th century?
Both manor courts and church courts were used less and less after this point, replaced by more frequent use of petty sessions.
What was the purpose of the assizes?
The assizes served as the countries main courts, dealing with serious offences such as murder and manslaughter.

The quarter sessions were held 4 times a year when JPs within a county would meet up to try less serious criminals.
What were petty sessions and what was their purpose?
Petty sessions were when small groups of JPs met up locally to administrate crime.

Manorial courts were used to control the behaviour on different manors.
