When was the Great plague?
1665
What did people believe caused the Plague?
Miasma was the most widely believed. Far fewer believed it was an imbalance of the 4 humours. People knew that disease could be passed from person to person
What is quarantine an example of?
Treatment
What other similar treatments/ remedies were used for the Great plague?
Herbal remedies, either mixed at home or by apothecaries and ‘quack’ doctors.
What were new treatments for the great plague?
Transference
(and sweating out the disease)
What was Transference?
People trying to transfer the disease to something else, such as a chicken.
How would treatment work for trying to sweat out disease?
Wrapping the sufferer in thick blankets and put next to a fire
What was the main difference of the plague outbreak between 1665 and 1348?
Government action / action of local councils

•Masks containing sweet-smelling herbs.
•Cloak that was waxed so nothing from the patent would be absorbed by it.
•Since birds were believed to attract disease- the bird shaped mask was in hope that it would cause the disease to leave the patient.
