1.5 - Tissues and organs Flashcards
Why do different cells have different functions?
During the production of multicellular organisms the cells differentiate to perform a particular purpose
What is a tissue?
A group of cells with a similar structure and function
What are three types of animal tissue?
- muscle tissue
- glandular tissue
- epithelial tissue
What is the function of muscle tissue?
To contract to bring about movement
What is the function of glandular tissue?
To produce substances such as enzymes or hormones
What is the function of epithelial tissue?
To cover some parts of the body
What are four types of plant tissue?
- epidermal tissue
- mesophyll
- xylem
- phloem
What is the function of epidermal tissue?
To cover the plant
What is the function of mesophyll?
To photosynthesise
What is the function of the xylem and phloem?
To transport substances around the plant
What are organs made of?
Several tissue types, working together to perform a function
What is the function of muscular tissue in the stomach?
To churn the stomach content
What is the function of glandular tissue in the stomach?
To produce digestive juices
What is the function of epithelial tissue in the stomach?
To cover the outside and inside of the stomach
What are three examples of plant organs?
- leaf
- stem
- root
