1.3 - Specialised cells Flashcards
Why are cells specialised?
To carry out a particular function
What is the structure of a cell linked to?
Its function
Why do muscle and sperm cells need a lot of mitochondria?
Mitochondria released energy, and they need a lot of energy for movement
Why do gland cells need a lot of ribosomes?
Gland cells produce enzymes, and therefore need to make a lot of protein. It need lots of ribosomes to do this because they are where protein synthesis takes place
What do some cells have tails?
Some cells, like sperm cells, need to move
What do the special structures in receptor cells allow them to do?
To detect stimuli, for example cone cells in the eye which are light sensitive
What are neurons specialised to do?
Carry impulses from receptors to the CNS
What can you tell about plant cells with many chloroplasts?
They will be photosynthesising, for example mesophyll cells of a leaf
How are root hair cells specialised and why?
They have a large surface area, so they increase the surface area of the root so that it can absorb water and mineral ions effectively
