What are the general characteristics of UTIs in children?
Most UTIs in children from ascending infections, although hematogenous spread may be more common in the first 12 weeks of life. E. coli, Proteus (more common in boys, children with renal stones), Klebsiella, Enterococcus, CN-Staph, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, Candida
What are the UTI risk factors for young children?
Known urinary tract abnormalities. Uncircumcised boys. History of UTI. Tempt > 39C (highly predictive); fever > 24 hrs (males), > 48hrs (females). Fever w/o an apparent source. Ill appearance. Suprapubic tenderness. Nonblack race
Why do neonates/infants have additional risks for UTIs?
Immune immaturity; breastfeeding protective (IgA, Lactoferrin, Anti-adhesive Oligosaccharides)
