1.5 Particles - Conservation and Strangeness Flashcards
Quantities which need to be conserved for particle reactions:
Charge
Baryon number
Lepton number
Strangeness
Quantities which need to be conserved in particle interactions:
Mass/energy
Momentum
Charge
Baryon number
Lepton number
Conservation of strangeness:
Strangeness is not conserved when a quark changes flavour (in weak interactions)
Strangeness must only be conserved in strong interactions
Weak interaction identification:
If there is a change in strangeness in a particle interaction equation, that interaction is a weak interaction
Strange particles:
Particles which are produced by the strong nuclear force but decay by the weak interaction
Strangeness:
A property of particles, which shows that strange particles must be created in pairs, as strangeness has to be conserved in strong interactions
However, in weak interactions strangeness can change by +1, 0, -1
