1.4 Particles - Hadrons Flashcards
Hadrons:
Subatomic particles which take part in the strong interaction
They are NOT fundamental particles
Further subdivided into baryons and mesons
Baryons:
Subatomic particles which are a type of hadron
Number of quarks in a baryon:
3
Baryon examples:
neutrons and protons
Baryon number of quarks:
u: +1/3
d: +1/3
s: +1/3
(opposite charge for antiquarks)
Relative charge of quarks:
u: +2/3 e
d: -1/3 e
s: -1/3 e
Strangeness of quarks:
u: 0
d: 0
s: -1
Quark composition of proton:
uud
Quark composition of neutron:
udd
The most stable baryon:
The proton - all baryons including neutrons will decay into protons
Mesons:
Subatomic particles which are a type of hadron
Quark composition of meson:
a quark and an antiquark
Subdivisions of mesons:
Pions and kaons
Pions:
Composed of only up and down quarks and their antiparticles
Kaons:
Contain one strange or anti strange quark
