Q

How can you make a model of a metallic bond?

A

Maltesers with the chocolate around the outside melted (don’t use this in the exam - just for memory!)

Q

Describe metallic bonding (4)

A
  • When metals pack together, the electrons in the highest energy level delocalise
  • They move freely between atoms
  • This produces a lattice of positive ions in a ‘sea’ of moving, delocalised electrons
  • The strong electrostatic forces between the positively charged metal ions and delocalised electrons hold the giant structures together
