1.5 - Metals Flashcards
1
Q
Compare the sizes of the atoms in a metallic element
A
They are all the same size
2
Q
How are the atoms arranged in a metal? (4)
A
- they form giant structures
- in which layers of atoms are
- arranged in regular patterns
- closely packed together
3
Q
How can you make a model of a metal structure?
A
By putting lots of small same-sized spheres like marbles together
4
Q
How can you make a model of a metallic bond?
A
Maltesers with the chocolate around the outside melted (don’t use this in the exam - just for memory!)
5
Q
Describe metallic bonding (4)
A
- When metals pack together, the electrons in the highest energy level delocalise
- They move freely between atoms
- This produces a lattice of positive ions in a ‘sea’ of moving, delocalised electrons
- The strong electrostatic forces between the positively charged metal ions and delocalised electrons hold the giant structures together
