1.3 - Formulae of ionic compounds Flashcards
1
Q
How can we work out the formulae of ionic compounds?
A
If we know the charge on each ion in a compound we can work out its formula by balancing the charges
2
Q
Why can we work out the formulae of ionic compounds if we know the charge on each ion in the compound?
A
Ionic compounds are neutral, so the charges must add up to zero.
3
Q
How can the charge on simple ions be worked out?
A
From the number of the group
4
Q
How can the charge on transition metals be worked out?
A
The charge on the ion is shown by the Roman numeral in the name of the compound
5
Q
What do we use if we need to multiply ions with more than one element to write a formula?
A
We use brackets
