Q
What does ‘medical clearance’ actually mean?
What is its purpose?
A
It means answering 2 questions:
- Does the patient have a significant acute medical illness which requires acute care, or a significant exacerbation of a chronic illness which requires acute management?
- Does the patient have an underlying physical or medical illness causing their psychological disturbance?
It does not mean the patient is cleared from any medical conditions. It is to determine if the patient has any condition that may make their admission to a psychiatric illness unsafe or inappropriate, even if their primary presentation is due to a psychiatric disturbance?
