1.5 Joints Flashcards
What is the most common type of joint?
Synovial joints
Define a synovial joint
Articulating bones separated by fluid filled space.
Describe a synovial joint’s fluid filled space.
Joint space surrounded by synovial membrane, strengthened by fibrous joint capsule.
What provides the interface between bones at a synovial joimt?
Articular (Hyaline) cartilage.
What is the role of articular cartilage?
lubrication for smooth sliding surface.
what is the blood supply of articular cartilage?
No nerves or blood supply (limited healing capacity)
what is cartilage made up of?
chondrocyte cells, collagen, other organic matrix components, water.
Where is synovial fluid secreted from?
synovial membrane.
what is synovial fluid?
a clear/straw colour viscous fluid, containing hyaluronic acid.
what is the role of synovial fluid?
lubrication and shock absorption
What is the role of menisci?
stops excessive motion in an undetermined direction, shock absorbers and stabilisers.
What are bursae and what are their roles?
fluid fulled sacs that work to cushion surfaces and to reduced friction between tissues.
Where are tendon sheaths found?
Wrap around tendons where they pass over joints.
What is the blood supply of articular cartilage?
Avascular - no blood supply
How is blood supplied to joints?
blood vessels supply epiphysis and joint capsule/synovial membrane.
