Twisted Pair Copper Cables
What is it?
What’s it’s purpose?
Why would you use it?
What are some specific details about it? (speed, what connector, etc.)
A type of cable, usually referring to ethernet.
It is the most common type of cable for ethernet connections, including UTP and STP (Unshielded twisted pair and shielded twisted pair) The difference is shielded provides more protection against EMI.
It’s made of copper, so it’s cheap and widely available.
Max cable length = 100m
Category of Ethernet cables
What are their names and speeds
Cat 3 10 Mbps
Cat 5 100 Mbps
Cat 5e 1 Gbps
Cat 6/6a 10 Gbps
Cat 5e and 6 are the only ones actually used.
cat6 only allows for 30 meters before attenuation and drop off.
568a and 568b
What are they?
Who made it?
Twisted-pair wiring standards. B is more common.
Eia/Tia standard..
The Electronic Industries Alliance Telecommunications Industry Association.
MDI-X
Medium dependent interface: Allows strat through cable for uplinks
Uplink is connecting one switch to another switch

Plenum grade cable
cables wrapped in pvc give off toxic fumes when burned. A plenum is an enclosed space that houses your air. Plenum grade cable will ensure no toxic fumes are released in the event of a fire.
Ethernet Standards
Baseband
Broadband
What are the differences?
What does this mean?
100BaseTX
Baseband means it can either send or receive it can’t do both. Broadband can handle multiple datastreans. Ex. people using multiple cable tvs.
100: line speed
Base: Baseband transmission
TX: cable stabdard. Tx-twisted pair or fiber
RJ-11
Registered Jack 11 3 pairs
used for telephone lines
Copper based
RJ-45/48
wide are network connections, like connecting routers to csu or dsu
4 pairs
Copper based
UTP Coupler
Can be used to extend patch cables
F-connector
Used for cable tv
Copper based
Serial connectors
Types
What’s ot dp
DB-9/RS-232
Used for old technology, making console connections with switches
DB-25 parallel port. Super dead.
Fiber
pros and cons
singlemode vs multimode
Transmites light instead of electricity
Pros: security, speed, distance
Cons:Expensive, termination,flexibility
single mode: one light path longer distance
multimode: many light propagation paths; shorter distance; less expensive than single mode
Fiber UPC vs APC
Ultraphysical contact: 1G blue; flat endface
Angled Physical Contact 2g Green, endface polished at 8 degree angle to eliminate airgap at termination point.
