1.5 Energy transfers in and between organisms (A-level only) Flashcards
Where does glycolysis occur?
Cytoplasm
Where does the Link reaction take place?
Mitochondrial matrix
Where does Krebs cycles occur?
Mitochondrial matrix
Where does oxidative phosphorylation occur?
Mitochondrial inner membrane cristae
What is the product of glycolysis?
pyruvate
What is the product of link reaction?
Acetylcoenezyme A
What is the product of the Krebs cycle per cycle?
3x reduced NAD
1x reduced FAD
1x ATP
2x CO2
What is the product of the Krebs cycle per glucose?
6x reduced NAD
2x Reduced FAD
2x ATP
4x CO2
What is biomass?
Mass of carbon or dry mass of tissue per given area
what is NPP?
Net primary production is the chemical energy store in plant biomass taking into account the energy that will be lost due to respiration.
what is GPP?
is the chemical energy store in plant biomass in a given area or volume. It is the total energy resulting from photosynthesis.
What are the units of rates of productivity?
kJ ha-1 year-1
Why are “kJ ha-1 year-1” units for rates of productivity?
kJ is the unit for energy
Per unit area is standardized to enable the environment to be compared and takes into account that the size of the different environments will vary.
The units are also per year to take into account the impact seasons will have on rain light and heat it provides and the annual average to allow fair comparisons between environments.
