Solvent water is a polar molecule having the oxygen being slightly negative and the hydrogens being partially positive. Only polar molecules dissolve non polar molecules will no as they are hydrophobic
Strong cohesion is the term of molecules sticking together by hydrogen bonds. Due to water sticking together water can move up the xylem in plants due to the transpiration stream which is constantly moving up and out the plant.
