14B Flashcards
what two conditions imporatnt in grignard reaction
stringent anhydrous conditions and ether solvent
Why must stringent anhydrouos?
bc strong nuc and strong base
why need ether?
because mg is electron deficient (4 electrons) so ether is able to use its LP to coordinate with Mg and donate electron density.
What also might we consider if reacting iwth gridnard reagents in regards to specific functional gorups?
avoid OH or alc or c acid because it is a strong base and dont want acid base reactions
What is trituration?
it is using petro ether to dissolve impurities into liquid and keep desired compound insoluble which we can remove by filtration.
Why is the grignard reaction tricky to initiate?
the intiial step requires electron transfer from the Mg surface to the alkyl halide leading for formation of R(radical) which is limited by diffusion control and availalbe surface area.
How do you overcome grignard reaction itiation problem?
you remove surface oxide and contiaminations via mortar and pestle which causes crystal lattice dislocations and iodine can also be added to activate as well.
