What is autocratic leadership
A
- The autocratic leadership style is most often found in factories, fast food businesses, and the police
- Direct orders are given and are to be followed
- Views and opinions of subordinates are not taken into account by managers who just issue orders and expect them to be followed
- This style is used when leaders tell their employees what they want done and how they want it accomplished, without getting the advice of their followers
- There is little or no consultation on decisions in a manager who uses an autocratic leadership style
- Staff are told what to do

What is democratic leadership
A
- Democratic leaders offer guidance to group members, but they also participate in the group and allow input from other group members.
- Employees have a higher degree of participation in the business and are allowed to collaborate on the decision making process
- Staff are involved
- The leader who uses a democratic style can be persuasive, in their opinion they have made decision and then they persuade subordinates into selecting the best option
- The leader who uses a democratic style may also consult with staff on decision making
- Staff have an input on decisions that effect the business

What is paternalistic management
A
- Pater was an old word for father, paternal means showing kindness like a father, but this could also be the leadership style of a woman.
- A leader who is being paternalistic makes the right decision for the employees that they are responsible for
- In this type of leadership there is a dominant authority figure who expects loyalty and trust from their employees
- They take the welfare of their staff into account when making the decisions

What is laissez-faire management
A
- This style of leadership is where employees can carry out activities and make decisions freely
- They work in a very relaxed environment and have little direction and guidelines
- Advantage; superb in creative environments such as web designers or artists
- Disadvantage; lack of supervision may lead to poor productivity and lack of motivation
