1.4.3 Fractional Distillation Flashcards
What is petroleum?
Petroleum is a mixture of hydrocarbons, mainly alkanes
What increases the strength of the Van Der Waals’ in the hydrocarbons?
The length of the chain
What does FD rely on?
It relies on the difference in boiling points
What is FD used for?
FD is used to separate different components of crude oil
Describe the temperature gradient in the fractionation column
The top is cooler than the bottom
What happens to the liquid with the lowest boiling point?
It escapes from the top as a vapour. It is then condensed.
What do the hydrocarbons do during FD?
They rise until they reach a fraction cool enough to condense them into a liquid
What is a typical use of the gases fraction?
Camping gas
What is a typical use of the petrol fraction?
Car fuel
What is a typical use of the naphtha fraction?
Feedstock for chemical industry
What is a typical use of the kerosene fraction?
Jet fuel
What is a typical use of the mineral oil fraction?
Lubricating oil
