14.2 Structure And Fucntion Of The Pancreas Flashcards
What is the pancreas two main function
Exocrine gland - produce enzymes and release them via a duct into the duodenum
Endocrine gland - produce hormones and release them into the blood
What is the pancreas role as an exocrine gland
Most pancreas is made up of exocrine glandular tissue
Tissue responsible for producing digestive enzymes and alkaline fluid known as pancreatic juice
Enzymes and juice secreted into ducts which lead to pancreatic duct
They are releases into the duodenum
What three important digestive enzymes does the pancreas produce
Amylases - break down starch into simple sugars
Proteases - break down proteins into amino acids
Lipases - beak down lipids into fatty acids and glycerol
What is the pancreas role as an endocrine gland
Pancreas is responsible for producing insulin and glucagon
Two hormones role
- controlling blood glucose concentration
- regulation of blood glucose
Islets of Langerhans responsible for producing insulin and glucagon secreting these hormones directly into bloodstream
Where i the islets of Langerhans found
Within exocrine tissue there is small regions of endocrine tissue which is called islets of Langerhans
What is the main difference in appearance and shape id endocrine and exocrine pancreatic tissue
Islets of Langerhans (en) - lightly stained, large and spherical clusters
Pancreatic acini (ex) - drakes stained, small berry like clusters
Within the islets of Langerhans are different types of cell they are classified according to the hormone they secrete
Alpha cell - these produce and secrete glucagon
Beta cells - these produce an secrete insulin
Alpha cells are larger and more numerous than beta cells within its islet
