14.2 Hybridization Flashcards
Hybridization
Mixing of atomic orbitals to produce hybrid orbitals used for bonding
1) Hybrid orbitals only form sigma bonds
sp3 Hybridization
1) 4 sp3 orbitals =3 p orbitals + 1 s orbital
2) All have the same energy
3) Electron domains= 4
4) Electron domain geometry= Tetrahedral
5) Molecular geometry= Tetrahedral, bent, trigonal pyramidal.
6) Bond angle= less than equal to 109.5
sp2 Hybridization
1) 3 sp2 orbitals= 2 p orbitals + 1 s orbital
2) 1 unhybridized p orbital (this one forms double bonds)
3) Electron domains= 3
4) Electron domain geometry= Trigonal planar
5) Molecular geometry= Trigonal planar
6) Bond angle= 120
sp Hybridization
1) 2 sp orbitals= 1 s orbital + 1 p orbital
2) 2 unhybridized p orbital (this one forms double/triple bonds)
3) Electron domains= 2
4) Electron domain geometry= Linear
5) Molecular geometry= Linear
6) Bond angle= 180
Lone pairs
Lone pairs are counted while determining the hybridization of an atom
