14.1 Storm Drainage 1 Flashcards
Who’s responsible for storm water drainage?
Architects and Engineers
Storm drainage is concerned about what?
Ice/water/snow. Building/roof drainage. Surface run-off. Sub-soil drain.
Which City has the highest rainfall rate?
Hilo, Hawaii (7” per hour)
What’s the return period for rainfall?
probability of storms once every 100 years
Rainfall rate for State College, PA
2.7”
You want to catch water at _____
low point
what’s a downspout?
Vertical rain-water conductor
What’s the purpose of a sub-soil drain?
protect foundation from water damage.
What’s a boots purpose?
Attach to end of rectangular downspout to the pipe to direct water where wanted.
What’s a splash block?
Bottom of downspout to catch the water.
What size is recommended for drainage piping?
At least 4”
T/F A pipe should always be half full
TRUE - to prevent water back up
How does water flow in vertical piping?
Water swirls around outer circumference. Center is hollow.
Calculation to determine gutter size/pipe size/flow rate:
- Determine projected roof area
- Divide roof area into number of downspouts
- Adjust the roof area by x rainfall rate
- Determine the foot slope then look at charge for gutter size/pipe size
- Flow rate divide by 96 ft^2
Purpose of a drip?
Get water to be far away from building
