GENERAL
A. Chief Instructor
FAA approved pilot schools must designate a chief instructor (CI) for each course of training. They must meet the requirements of 141.35.

B. Assistanct Chief Instructor
Each FAA approved school may designate one or more assistant chief instructors (ACI). They must meet the requirements of 141.36 to act for the chief instructor in their absence.

C. Standardization of Assistant Chief Instructors
This task must be accomplished in the same manner as for the CI.

D. Check Instructors
A school my designate a person to be a check instructor for conducting stage checks, end of course tests, and IP checks in accordance to 141.37.
INITIATION
A. Chief and/or Assistant Chief Instructor Designation
A pilot school designates one when the school applies for, and is approved for, certification in a particular course. The school designates them by name in the TCO.

B. Approval as Part of TCO Evaluation
The letter of intent (LOI) must describe the name and qualifications of each intended CI and/or ACI for each course.
INITIATION
C. Examination of the Candidate
1) CI must meet 141.35, ACI must meet 141.36
2) They must pass both knowledge and skill portion of test for each course they are designated for
3) The test reviews appropriate FARs, PTS, TCOs, and safety procedures of the school
4) The knowledge portion consists of at least:
a) the teaching methods and approriate AIM sections
b) 14 CFR 61, 91, and 141
c) a discussion of the course (standards, objectives)
d) the use and understanding of all training aids
5) The practical portion of the test consists of evaluating the applicants skills of their respective course’s PTS
