Pragmatics
The way language is used to convey messages including making requests, how polite they are and how grammar serves the purpose of speakers as social beings.
E.g. a child uses pragmatic knowledge when they say “please” when asking for a cookie.
Babbling
A sequence of consonants and vowels strung together. Begins around 6 months. Formed by open syllables and reduplication,
e.g. “babababa”
First language transfer
Aspects of the first language are present in the L2 which causes an error.
“Tarn right” instead of “turn right”
Input
speech or input that the child or learner is exposed to. the most common input a child is exposed to is ‘motherese’ of ‘baby talk’
E.g. repeating questions or expanding on what the child said.
Discourse competence
the ‘big picture’ knowledge of how language fits together. Inc. understanding how to open and close the discourse.
Passive vocabulary
passive vocab is language understood but not commonly part of our language use. “gregarious”
