1.4 - Variation Flashcards
What is environmental variation?
Differences between individuals due to the surroundings e.g hair length, piercings, accent
What is continuous variation?
This means that there is a continuous range of something e.g heights, weight- Any values in a population
What is discontinuous variation?
No range or inbetween- one or the other e.g hair colour, eye colour, shoe size
What is mutation?
A randomly derived change to the base sequence of the genetic material of an organism
What are mutations caused by?
- copying errors in cell division
- exposure to mutagens such as ultraviolet or ionising radiation
What can happen to a protein during a mutation?
-protein might contain a different amino acid and be faulty
What is cystic fibrosis?
A hereditary disease caused by a faulty gene which makes it harder to breathe and digest food
What are the symptoms of cystic fibrosis?
- cough and wheeze
- recurring chest and lung infections
- malnutrition
How does oxygen therapy help cystic fibrosis?
It helps by making it easier to breathe by inhaling oxygen through a mask
How does physiotherapy help cystic fibrosis?
It helps to loosen the thick, sticky mucus from the lungs which reduces infection because it helps prevent mucus blocking the air passages
What is genetic variation?
Characteristics that are inherited from parents e.g eye colour, nose shapr
