14. Sustainability - Eigg Case Study Flashcards
Where is Eigg
How big is it
What is it’s population size
Eigg is a small islands off the west coast of Scotland, with an area of 31km^2 and a resident population of about 100.
What is the Isle of Eigg trust?
In 1996 the community set up the Isle of Eigg trust with the Scottish wildlife trust to buy the island from the existing landowner then manage the island for the benefit of the community, the wildlife of the island and the wider environment.
Was the Eigg project successful?
The success of the Eigg project has become a model of how to merge community and environmental priorities that had inspired and informed many other communities.
What is Eiggs energy strategy?
Eigg is not connected to the national electricity grid. The islands energy strategy emphasises renewable energy and the phasing out of fossil fuels.
How does Eigg provide electricity?
An island electricity grid was established in 2008 to distribute electricity generated by renewable sources, with diesel generators for back-up.
- Three HEP generators provide electricity for the island grid, the largest having a capacity of 100Kw. Some house holds have independent micro-hydro systems.
- A 50Kw solar PV system provides electricity for the island grid. Some households have solar PV and photo-thermal systems.
- Four wind turbines generate up to 24Kw of electricity
How does Eigg provide energy for heating?
Wood biomass is used for heating in many properties
How does Eigg fuel vehicles?
Almost all vehicles use frail or petrol, but some use electricity. Further developments with renewable energy and energy storage will make the move away from fossil fuels easier.
How does Eigg dispose of waste?
Recyclable waste is collected and shipped off the island for recycling. Garden and food waste is composted and used as a garden soil improver.
