1.4 Sustainability Flashcards
Sustainability
The use of global resources at the rate that allows natural regeneration and minimises environmental damage
Natural capital
Natural resources that are managed to provide sustainable income, goods, and services
Natural income
The portion of a natural capital that result in income
Describe a sustainable process in terms of natural capital and natural income
A process where the amount of natural income does not reduce the ability of the natural capital to provide resources at the same rate
Three Aspects of sustainability
Social, economic, and environmental
Environmental impact assessment, EIA
Studies that are carried out before development projects to assess possible damage to the environment
What does an environmental impact assessment include?
A baseline study to evaluate current conditions; survey to assess possible impact; a prediction of what the consequences will be; a summary on how the effects may be limited
Environmental impact assessment, downsides
No standardised guide on how it should be written; no certainty that the proposal will be implemented; no standard training for the ones writing the report
Ecological footprint
The area of land and water required to support a defined human population at a given standard of living
When is an ecological footprint considered sustainable?
If the ecological footprint is smaller than the area available for the population
