1.4 Starch, glycogen and cellulose Flashcards
What is starch made up of?
chains of a-glucose monosaccharides
What bonds are found in starch?
Glycosidic bonds
How is starch suited for energy storage?
-insoluble (doesn’t effect water potential)
-large (does not diffuse out of cells)
-compact
-when hydrolysed it forms a-glucose
Is starch found in Animals?
no
(a similar polysaccharide called glycogen serves the same role)
Is glycogen found in plant cells?
no
How is glycogen suited for storage?
-insoluble
-does not diffused out of cells
-compact
-more highly branched than starch- has more ends that can be acted on simultaneously by enzymes
How does cellulose differ from starch and glucose?
made up of monomers of B-glucose rather than a-glucose
what is celluloses purpose in a plant cell?
a major component of the cell walls and provides rigity to the plant cell
How is the structure of cellulose suited to it’d function of providing support and rigidity?
-made up of B-glucose (form long straight, unbranched chains)
-cross linked by hydrogen bonds which add collective strength
