14 PRACTICE AREAS Flashcards
INJURY PREVENTION
Poor body mechanics is the cause of workplace injuries.
Enormous costs from injury: lost production, sick time, worker, insurance cost.
HIGH RISK CATEGORIES FOR REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURIES
- Non-neutral postures.
- Static muscle contractions.
- Repetitive movements.
- Over-exertion.
- NON-NEUTRAL POSTURES
Body positions that put increased force due to gravity on the tissues of the body.
Working with the joints in the extremes of range of motion, causing compression of the joint.
Standing with knees locked.
- STATIC MUSCLE CONTRACITONS
Static muscle contractions (even with relatively small forces) fatigue muscles and other tissues very quickly due to reduced blood supply.
Driving.
- REPETITIVE MOVEMENTS
Tasks that require repeated use of a given body area, putting stress on tendons and ligaments.
Pulling wrenches.
- OVER-EXERTION
These are tasks (usually lifting, carrying, or pushing/pulling) that exceed an individual’s physical abilities.
Poor body mechanics places strain on a weak body part.
WORK AND PHYSICAL THERAPY
Teaching proper body mechanics.
Modelling, using, and advocating proper body mechanics.
Evaluating body mechanics.
Helping prepare clients.
3 IMPORTANT FACTORS FOR RETURNING TO WORK
- Return to work earlier.
- Linking the worker to job tasks during rehab.
- Modified work situation.
WORK CONDITIONING
Specific job demands are replicated in a controlled, safe manner to promote proper technique.
GOAL OF PEDIATRICS
Achieving potential.
Understanding and ability to play, sing, laugh, jump, and move.
Be creative.
GOALS OF SENIORS
Fall prevention.
Comfort and pain relief.
Understanding and ability to sing, laugh, move and motivate.
Be creative in implementing treatment.
Ability to listen and hear the concerns.
BARIATRICS
Weight bias: negative attitudes against them.
Weight stigma: stereotypes assign to people who are obese.
Weight discrimination: actions against people.
GOALS FOR BARIATRICS
Supporting clients in their own understanding of weight management.
Regular physiotherapy.
EVOLVING AREAS OF PRACTICE
Cancer treatment.
High level sports.
Physiotherapy.
