1.4 Physical Properties Flashcards
What are physical properties? Give some examples.
A physical property is an observable and measurable physical characteristic of matter.
Ice cubes
How are physical descriptions and physical properties similar?
They are both used to observe and describe matter.
How does density determine whether an object will float?
As the density increases the object is more prone to sink whether the less density it is more prone to float
What is the main difference between extensive and intensive physical properties?
The type depends on whether the size of the substance affects the property or not.
Intensive physical properties are independent of the amount of the sample
What are some examples of both types of physical properties?
,
Give an example of something that has high specific heat capacity.
An example of a high specific heat is water’s specific heat, which requires 4.184 joules of heat to increase the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius.
Explain how you can use physical properties to compare substances.

VIDEO What are physical properties?
A physical property is any property that is measurable, whose value describes a state of a physical system. The changes in the physical properties of a system can be used to describe its changes between momentary states. Physical properties are often referred to as observables.
VIDEO What is magnetism?
Magnetism is a class of physical phenomena that are mediated by magnetic fields. Electric currents and the magnetic moments of elementary particles give rise to a magnetic field, which acts on other currents and magnetic moments
VIDEO How do magnetic forces repel or attract?
,
VIDEO What is electrical conductivity?
Electrical conductivity is the measure of the amount of electrical current a material can carry or it’s ability to carry a current. Electrical conductivity is also known as specific conductance. Conductivity is an intrinsic property of a material.
VIDEO What types of materials make good electrical conductors?
Aluminum, Copper
What is thermal conductivity?
-a material’s ability to conduct heat
VIDEO What types of materials are good heat conductors?
Wood, silver, copper, aluminum.
VIDEO What is the boiling point?
The boiling point of a substance is the temperature at which the vapor pressure of a liquid equals the pressure surrounding the liquid and the liquid changes into a vapor. The boiling point of a liquid varies depending upon the surrounding environmental pressure.
