What does Judaism teach Jews about death?
It is inevitable
Jews shouldn’t die alone

What is considered to be a great act of kindness?
Being present at the time of death and to close the dead persons eyes
What is the blessing that Jews make to God upon hearing the death of a loved one?
‘Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, the True Judge’
What traditional customs do Jews follow?
Intense mourning - before burial, seven days after burial
Lesser mourning - further 30 days
Why do Jews follow these traditional customs?
To show respect to the dying person, and show they accept God has taken their loved ones life
What do Jews believe happens after death?
Some believe life after death will be a physical life, others believe it will be spiritual
What do teachings about afterlife imply?
That the good will enter paradise (Gan Eden), whilst others will go to Sheol (where souls are cleansed)
What do Jews believe heaven/paradise is like?
No clear teaching of it
What do some Jews believe will happen as soon as they die?
God will judge them - Ecclesiastes 12:7
When do some Jews believe God will judge everyone?
Day of Judgement - after coming of Messiah - decided who goes to heaven and who goes to hell
Daniel 12:2 quote:
‘Many of those that sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to eternal life, others to reproaches, to everlasting abhorrence’
Ecclesiastes 12:7 quote:
‘And the dust returns to the ground As it was, And the lifebreath returns to God Who bestowed it’
What is the idea of resurrection in Judaism?
The idea that at some point after death, people will rise from their graves to live again - yet many Jews reject this idea
What is one of the reasons for the lack of agreement about the afterlife?
Jews believe the present is more important, and they should focus on living in a way that is pleasing to God
