14. (Histology) Leucocyte conditions Flashcards
What are the two different lineages of white blood cells in humans?
Myeloid cells
Lymphoid cells
What different cell types can myeloid cells differentiate into?
Basophils
Neutrophils
Eosinophils
What different cell types can myeloid cells differentiate into?
B or T lymphocytes
Plasma cells
NK cells
What is meant by ‘penia’?
Too little
What is meant by ‘philia’?
Too much
What is meant by ‘cytosis’?
Too much
What is meant by neutropenia?
Too little neutrophils - not enough
What is meant by neutrophilia?
Too many neutrophils
What is meant by lymphocytosis?
Too many lymphocytes
What is the function of the neutrophil?
First cell at the site of infection
Role in immune surveillance
Kill microbes via phagocytosis
What are the causes of neutrophilia?
Infection - especially bacterial rather than viral Inflammation Trauma Active cancer Myeloproliferative condition
Is neutrophilia more common in bacteria or viral infections?
Bacterial
What is the normal range for WBCs?
Up to 11
What is the cause of eosinophilia?
Allergy/atopy e.g. hayfever, eczema, asthma
Parasitic infections
