14. Endodontic Diseases Flashcards
what is endodontics?
study of the basic and clinical sciences of normal dental pulp, the aetiology, diagnosis, prevention, treatment of diseases and injuries of the dental pulp along with associated peri radicular conditions
what diseases are included in endodontic disease?
- plural disease
- apical disease
- serious odontogenic infection
- other non endodontic disease
what is pulp?
unmineralised tissue composed of soft connective tissue, vascular, lymphatic and nervous elements
where is the pulp found?
central cavity of each tooth
- encased in hard tissue
where is apical disease? (periapical)
acute or chronic inflammatory lesion around apex of tooth root
what causes apical (periapical) disease?
bacterial invasion of the pulp of the tooth
what is tooth decay/dental caries?
destruction of dental hard tissue by acid produced by bacteria utilising dietary sugar (and time)
what symptom would the patient have if the pulp was inflamed?
toothache
when the pulp is inflamed it causes tooth ache. describe reversible pulpitis?
remove decay and cover the tooth and its function
when the pulp is inflamed it causes tooth ache. describe irreversible pulpitis?
likely to loose tooth
what happens when the periodontal ligament becomes inflamed?
progresses to bone loss around apex of tooth
- apical periodontitis
what is an acute abscess?
happens quickly
- accumulation of pus
what is a chronic abscess?
happens slowly
- chronic apical abscess (sinus formation)
what are the warning signs of abscess and cellulitis?
malaise
fever
cellulitis
lymphadenopathy
progressive and persistent swelling
what is a dental abscess?
localised infection of pus that forms inside the teeth or gums which essentially initiate from bacterial infection.
