1.4 Conduction Flashcards
1
Q
How does conduction work?
A
- heat at one end of the solid
- those particles gain kinetic energy and vibrate more
- the energy is passed to neighbouring particles by collision and is transferred through the solid
- the particles are now vibrating more so aren’t in their fixed positions and can flow
2
Q
Which type of solid is the best conductor?
A
Metals
3
Q
Why are metals the best conductors?
A
When they are heated, their free electrons gain kinetic energy and move through the metal, transferring energy by colliding with other particles
4
Q
Why are materials such as wool and fibreglass good insulators?
A
They contain trapped air which prevents conduction from happening, as the particles in the air are too far apart to be useful in conduction
5
Q
Why are non metals poor conductors?
A
They don’t contain free electrons
6
Q
Where does conduction mainly occur?
A
Solids
