1.4 Composites Flashcards
What are the 6 composites we must know
CFRP
GRP
MDF
hardboard
chipboard
plywood
What is CFRP a mix of
carbon fibres mixed with polyester resin
What is GRP a mix of
glass fibres mixed with polyester resin
What is mdf,hardboar and chipboard
compressed wood fibres
or wood chips
sometimes with resin UR
What is plywood
thin layers of wood placed at 90 to one other and compressed
What are the properties of CFRP
lightweight, corrosion resistant, tough, hard, good compressive strength, low thermal expansion
What are the properties of GRP
Lightweight, corrosion resistant, tough hard, low thermal expansion and good compressive strength
What are the properties of MDF
two smooth faces
good strength and easy to cut and shape
What are the properties of hardboard
one hard shiny smooth surface - does not split easily
What are the properties of chipboard
good strength, easy to cut but can chip on a cut edge, unattractive
What are the properties of plywood
good strength in all directions, no grain weakness
always odd number of layers
What are the uses of CFRP
Sports equipment: bike frames, tennis racquets, fishing rods, racing car bodies etc.
What are the uses of GRP
Boat hulls, pond liners, kayak shells, sports car bodies
What are the uses of MDF
model making
furniture items - bookcases, flat packs
What are the uses of hardboard
furniture inserts e.g wardrobe backings, drawer bases
