Q

What are buffers?

A

HCO3- Non HCO3-
Buffer is any substance that consumes or releases H+ helping to stabilize pH
Buffer value of a solution is the quantity of H+ that can be added or removed causing a change of 1 pH unit
Whole blood in the absence of CO2 and HCO3- is ~25mM/pH
