what are the two theories of hypnosis?
role-playing and altered consciousness
what is role-playing?
hypnosis produces a normal mental state in which suggestible people act out the role of a hypnotic subject and behave as they think hypnotised people are supposed to.
- effects have been duplicated or exaggerated by non-hypnotised subjects
- situational factors lead suggestible subjects to act out a role
what is altered consciousness?
disassociation; splitting off of mental processes into two separate, simultaneous streams of awareness.
