the sleep and waking cycle
what is partial sleep deprivation?
occurs when people make do with substantially less sleep than normal over some time.
- effects; impaired attention, reaction time, motor coordination and decision-making
- negative effects on immune and endocrine systems.
- transportation accidents and mishaps in the workplace.
what is REM sleep and what does the deprivation of it cause?
- REM and slow-wave sleep contribute to memory consolidation, performance and activity.
- deprivation lowers students’ grades
what are the 5 sleep disorders?
- insomnia
- narcolepsy
- sleep apnea
- somnambulism (sleep-walking)
- REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD)
what is insomnia?
chronic problems in getting adequate sleep which results in daytime fatigue and impaired functioning.
- symptoms; difficulty in falling asleep initially, difficulty in remaining asleep and persistent early-morning awakening.
what is narcolepsy?
a disease marked by sudden and irresistible onsets of sleep during normal waking periods.
- symptoms; going directly from wakefulness into REM sleep usually for a short period. (10-20mins)
what is sleep apnea?
a sleep disorder characterized by frequent reflexive gasping for air that awakens a person and disrupts sleep.
- symptoms; stops breathing for a minimum of 10s; usually accompanied by loud snoring
what is somnambulism?
arising and wandering around while still asleep, sleepwalking
- symptoms; tend to occur during the first 3 hours of sleep, usually during slow-wave sleep. can last for up to a minute or 2, or even 30 minutes; may awaken during or after their journey.
what is RBD?
a sleep disorder marked by potentially troublesome sleep enactments during REM periods.
- symptoms; talking, yelling, gesturing, flailing about, or leaping out of bed during REM dreams.
