1.4 Flashcards
Why is carbon important?
It is the building block of life and also provides energy in sugars or other compounds.
Carbon sinks
Plants, ocean, soil
Carbon sources
Animals, fossil fuels, deforrestation, also plants, natural fires or combustion
Biological Carbon cycle consists of:
Photosynthesis and respiration
Is photosynthesis a Carbon source or sink?
Sink
Is respiration a Carbon source or sink?
Source
Photosynthesis process
Plants take in light, water, and carbon dioxide. Out of this, they produce glucose and oxygen
Respiration process
Glucose and oxygen (water as well) are used to create energy with carbon dioxide and water as a byproduct
Direct Exchange
The quick process by which carbon dioxide dissolves into and out of the ocean/water
Algae, phytoplankton, and coral reef role in carbon cycle
Also take carbon dioxide out of the ocean through photosynthesis and calcium carbonate shell creation
Sedimentation
The process by which marine organisms die and break down into carbon sediments
Burial
The process by which carbon-containing sediments are are compressed by water pressure to create sedimentary stone. Creates fossil fuels as well.
Extraction & Combustion
Digging or mining fossil fuels for an energy source, releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere
