13.6 Organisation of the nervous system Flashcards
structural organisation of neurones in nervous system
mammilian nervous system organised into two systems:
* Centeral nervous system CNS (brain and spinal cord)
* Peripheral nervous system PNS (all of the neruorne that cinnect the CNS to the rest if the body, sensory whcih carry nerve impulses from the receptors to the CNS, and the motor neurone which carrry nerve impulses away from the CNS to the effectors)
Functional Organisation (functionally organised into 2 systems)
Somatic ns- under conscious control - when you voluntarily decide to do something e.g. decide to move a muscle in your arm
Autonomic ns- works constantly subconciously involuntarily e.g. heartbeat, digestion, impulses to glands, smooth muscle (e.g. walls of intestine) and cadriac muscle
division of autonomic
sympathetic
parasympathetic
parasympathetic
outcome decreases activity e.g. heart / breathng rate after excericise
